The Ibis-headed patron of hieroglyph writing and inventor of papyrus as early as 3100 BCE, this precursor of the androgynous Greek god Hermes ruled time and the moon. Also depicted as his baboon animal companion, Thoth was the creator of language, astronomy, mathematics, geometry and music. He is the patron of art and scholarship.
