This sculpture shows Isis with her wings extended in a pose of protection, often used to protect her son Horus or her husband Osiris. The name Isis means "Seat" or "Throne". She was regarded as the symbolical mother of the King. In myth she sought her dead husband and brother, Osiris, conceived her son Horus by him, buried and mourned him together with her sister Nephtys. Isis was regarded as the “Eye of Ra” and was worshipped as the "Great of Magic" who had protected her son Horus from snakes, predators and other dangers; thus she would protect mortal children also. In the New Kingdom Isis was closely connected with Hathor whose physical attributes, the cow's horns and sun-disk she adopted.
Bonded marble statue is 9 1/2 inches high. Gold finish with color detail.
Based on a bronze statue of Isis on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo that was found at Saqqara, the origin date is uncertain. The statue consists of a particular iconography of the goddess Isis shown with open wings and arms stretched forward. The goddess is wrapped in a long tunic that leavers her ankles uncovered and she wears a broad necklace. Her face is framed by a 3 part wig topped by the body of a vulture and a typical Hathor headdress - the sun disk between cow's horns on a flared head-covering decorated with uraeus serpents which is worn by many "mother" goddesses.
The wings are associated with Isis as the goddess linked to the mystery of life reborn, personified in the god Osiris. She was presented as a guardian diety able to aid those who request her help, to heal sickness, and to assist the suffering. It is these powers to assist and comfort those in need that her spread wings refer to. She is also a representation of sorcery, able to take any physical form necessary in order to resolve critical situations with the use of magical forumulas.
